Weird Frontiers

Adventure Seeds

  1. The Surveyor’s Extra Lot — A town survey shows one more property than its streets contain. Taxes have been paid on it for years, and the latest deed bears the signature of someone who vanished last winter.

  2. The Barber’s Waiting Room — Customers at a new barbershop leave remembering conversations they never had. One such memory accurately describes a crime planned for the following night.

  3. The Bell at Closing Time — A general store’s counter bell rings after the shop is locked. Each morning, an item has moved from the shelves to a parcel addressed to a different resident.

  4. The Schoolhouse’s Second Roll — A teacher finds a second attendance sheet naming children unknown to the town. Desks are being moved to make room for them, and someone has begun packing lunches.

  5. The Town That Rents Its Shadows — A traveling showman pays residents to pose beneath a bright lamp. Their shadows remain on his canvas after they leave, acting out moments the subjects have not yet lived.

  6. The Doctor’s Empty Appointment — The town physician reserves the same hour each week for a patient no one sees. When the physician falls ill, the unseen patient arrives asking the posse to continue the treatment.

  7. A Window Facing Yesterday — A hotel room’s window overlooks a street as it appeared before the hotel was built. A guest recognizes a person in that view and insists they are still alive.

  8. The Mayor’s Other Signature — Contracts signed by the mayor acquire a second, unfamiliar signature overnight. The added signer begins demanding that the town honor promises hidden in the contracts’ fine print.

  9. The Water-Tower Vote — A new water tower draws clean water, but residents who drink from it agree on every matter put to a vote. The town needs the water; its next vote concerns who will control the tower.

  10. The Undertaker’s Unclaimed Coat — A winter coat arrives at the undertaker’s every morning, wet with fresh snow even in summer. Each time it is returned to its owner, a different person’s name appears stitched inside.

  11. The Mile That Costs a Day — Travelers crossing one stretch of road arrive a day late without noticing lost time. Freight companies want the route reopened; a homesteader says the missing day saved her family.

  12. The Passenger Who Bought the Return — A stagecoach passenger pays for a return ticket, then disappears before reaching the outbound stop. The ticket is stamped as used on a coach that has not yet departed.

  13. The Freight with No Weight — A sealed crate changes the balance of every wagon carrying it while registering nothing on a scale. Its consignee refuses delivery unless the posse can say what else is traveling inside.

  14. The Telegraph’s Courtesy Reply — A broken telegraph line answers messages with polite, useful advice. Its replies become more personal, eventually asking an operator to keep one warning from its intended recipient.

  15. The Crossing Keeper — At a dangerous river crossing, a stranger helps each party ford safely and asks for a small object in thanks. The objects later turn up arranged along a route into the hills.

  16. The Third Set of Tracks — A coach robbery leaves tracks from horses, wheels, and a third conveyance that never touched the ground. Its trail heads toward a town whose residents deny hearing the robbery.

  17. The Mailbag’s Missing Week — Letters sent over one week vanish from the postal route, while replies to them arrive normally. The posse is hired to recover the bag before a correspondent acts on an answer to a question nobody received.

  18. The Rail Crew’s Quiet Hour — Workers building a rail spur refuse to work during one hour each afternoon. Their foreman calls it superstition; the crew has learned that sounds made then are repeated beneath the rails after dark.

  19. The Siding That Moves — A freight car left on a remote siding turns up at a different station each dawn. It carries the same cargo, but its seals record a growing number of inspections.

  20. The Lantern at the Divide — A trail marker lamp shines toward a safe pass when storms approach. This time it points toward a narrow gorge while every experienced guide recommends the open road.

  21. The Brand That Spreads — Cattle from rival ranches develop the same unfamiliar brand without signs of injury. The mark also appears on fence posts along a disputed property line.

  22. The Orchard in the Dust — Fruit trees grow overnight on an abandoned claim. Their crop could feed a struggling settlement, but harvesting them makes the soil beneath neighboring farms turn hard as stone.

  23. The Fence Built Inward — A rancher hires the posse after finding new fence posts driven inside his own boundary each morning. Following their line reveals that something on the property is being enclosed.

  24. The Well with a Guest Book — A remote well produces water only for travelers who sign a ledger beside it. The names are later crossed out by an unseen hand, and the water stops until the posse learns why.

  25. The Claim Beneath the Claim — A prospector discovers valuable ore below a supposedly exhausted mine. An older claim document grants its minerals to a person listed only by a mark that also appears deep underground.

  26. A Harvest of Nails — Metal nails push up through a farmer’s field after every rain. Each bears the stamp of a different smith, some from towns that no longer exist.

  27. The Cattle That Won’t Cross — An entire herd refuses to pass a shallow arroyo despite thirst on the other side. The ranch hands spot their own campfire burning across it before anyone has made camp.

  28. The Last Acre of Green — Drought leaves one acre untouched. Its owner offers water and shade freely, then discovers that every visitor dreams of building a home there and refuses to leave.

  29. The Windmill’s Spare Turn — A windmill continues turning once after every gust dies. A mechanic counts the extra turns and realizes they match the number of people sleeping in the nearby bunkhouse—until the count increases.

  30. The Land Office’s Blank Map — A land agent issues a map with a white patch where several occupied homesteads should stand. The families are still there, but neighboring settlers can no longer describe how to reach them.

  31. The Gambler’s Honest Deck — A cardsharp acquires a deck that exposes every attempt to cheat, including their own. They want rid of it before a high stakes game; its previous owner wants to know who made it.

  32. A Sermon in Two Voices — A preacher’s recorded sermon plays back with a second voice calmly disputing each claim. Listeners begin seeking out that voice, and its advice proves sound at an unsettling cost.

  33. The Apothecary’s Label — Medicine bottles from an apothecary acquire new handwritten instructions after sale. Patients improve when they follow them, but the instructions increasingly require help from strangers.

  34. The Photographer’s Empty Plate — A photographer develops a group portrait in which one sitter is absent and a person no one recalls appears at the edge. Subsequent photographs show the newcomer drawing closer.

  35. The Bookkeeper’s Forgiveness — A ledger erases debts whenever its owner falls asleep. The freed debtors celebrate until the erased amounts begin appearing as obligations owed by people they love.

  36. The Key That Fits Regret — A locksmith finds a key that opens doors associated with their customers’ worst memories. It opens an ordinary locked room for one customer who insists nothing bad happened there.

  37. The Clockmaker’s Borrowed Hour — A clockmaker can keep one clock running during a townwide stoppage of time. Each use restores a little more than an hour to someone else, with consequences they did not choose.

  38. The Musician’s Last Note — A fiddler’s tune makes listeners recall a place they have never visited. Its final note has gone missing from the musician’s written copy, and people who remember it disagree on what happened there.

  39. The Witness on Paper — A legal deposition gains a new paragraph each night from a witness who has not been found. The testimony identifies real evidence, but also accuses the person investigating it.

  40. The Collector of Small Mercies — A peddler buys stories of narrow escapes for a coin apiece. Those who sell them begin suffering accidents they once avoided, while the peddler’s wagon fills with objects from incidents that never occurred.

  41. The Ridge That Answers — Calling across a distant ridge brings back replies in the caller’s own voice. One reply asks the posse to come quickly; another warns them to stay away.

  42. The Dry River’s Ferry — A ferry operator appears on a riverbed where water has not flowed for years. Their vessel carries passengers across safely, but those who return cannot agree which bank they started from.

  43. The Mine’s Second Shift — Tools are found cleaned and ore stacked after miners leave a sealed shaft for the night. The unseen workers appear to be following an older mine plan that intersects an occupied tunnel.

  44. The Prairie’s Glass Rain — After a cloudless night, a narrow strip of prairie is covered in tiny glass beads. Each contains an image of the same homestead at a different hour, including one that has not happened.

  45. The Mountain’s Low Door — A small door appears in a rock face beside a well traveled trail. Its hinges are new, its interior is older than the surrounding mineworks, and someone has left provisions just inside.

  46. The Salt Flat’s Footsteps — A set of barefoot tracks crosses a salt flat at dawn without a return trail. Each day the tracks begin closer to town, and their stride suggests the walker is growing tired.

  47. The Fire Lookout’s Map — A lookout marks a fire moving across country too wet to burn. People along its path report no flames, only the sudden loss of one memory they had shared.

  48. The Canyon’s Spare Echo — A canyon returns every shout twice: once normally and once from a voice farther down the trail. The second echo begins answering questions no one shouted.

  49. The Spring Thaw’s Cargo — Floodwater carries sealed trunks into a settlement from upstream. Each trunk is addressed to a local resident and contains something they discarded years ago, preserved in perfect condition.

  50. The Road Home by Starlight — A familiar trail can be followed only at night after the stars shift out of their usual positions. Travelers who use it reach home safely, but find a different road running through their town the next morning.
