Valsharein
A completely new and original idea.
This one has been rattling around in my mind for many years now.
So, finally I felt the undeniable urge to open my thoughts and let creation begin.
Here is what I have so far. This world shall be ever-evolving and ever-expanding.
The fantasy world of Valsharein is a realm defined by striking dualities: the ancient and the newborn, the deeply magical and the starkly material, the towering spires of crystalline cities and the tangled, dangerous depths of untamed wilderness. It is a high-fantasy setting built upon the bones of a long-forgotten cosmic cataclysm, where the remnants of an elder age constantly shape the geopolitics, culture, and magical laws of the present.
At its core, Valsharein includes a complex tapestry of unique geography, distinct cultures, intricate magical systems, and a brewing conflict that threatens to reshape the world entirely.
The Geography of Valsharein
Valsharein is divided into three primary continental masses, each isolated by turbulent, monster-infested oceans, yet linked by fragile networks of magical portals known as the World-Gates.
Eldoria: The Cradle of Silver Spires
Eldoria is the cultural and political heart of Valsharein. It is a continent characterized by rolling emerald hills, ancient, sentient forests that whisper in a long-forgotten tongue, and the magnificent Aegis Mountains. Nestled within these peaks is Aethelgard, the capital of the High Elven magocracy. Aethelgard is a city carved entirely from white marble and reinforced with threads of solid light.
Further south, Eldoria transitions into the fertile plains of the Valenor Republic, a sprawling federation of human and halfling settlements governed by a council of merchants and retired knights. The republic is the agricultural backbone of the continent, famous for its golden wheat fields and the massive, fortified trading hub of Oakhaven.
Xylos: The Shattered Badlands
To the east lies Xylos, a harsh, scarred continent that bears the brunt of the ancient cataclysm. The landscape is dominated by the Obsidian Expanse, a desert of black glass sand where magical storms, known as Aether-Wastes, drop volatile raw magic instead of rain.
Despite the hostility of the environment, Xylos is rich in Aetherite, a glowing purple crystal that serves as the world’s primary fuel source for high-level enchantment and technomagic. The subterranean kingdom of Krag-Deep, populated by the deeply industrious and practical Deep Dwarves, twists beneath the mountains of Xylos. These dwarves have engineered massive geothermal refineries to harness the dangerous magical radiation of the badlands.
The Sunken Reach: The Wild Wilds
The Sunken Reach is a vast archipelago to the south, where the veil between the material plane and the primal forces of nature is razor-thin. It is a land of dense, predatory rainforests, massive mangrove swamps, and active volcanoes. The islands are home to nomadic clans of beastfolk, wood elves, and the mysterious Saurian Tribes—ancient reptilian humanoids who guard ruins that predate the current gods.
Navigation here is treacherous, as the islands themselves are known to shift positions due to the volatile tectonic and magical activity of the ocean floor.
The Peoples and Societies
Valsharein features a diverse array of ancestries, each deeply influenced by the land they inhabit.
The Luminary Elves: Unlike traditional fantasy elves, the high elves of Valsharein are deeply tied to the stars. They believe their ancestors descended from the constellation of the Silver Phoenix. They wear sweeping, ceremonial robes of deep crimson and gold to contrast their stark white hair, practicing a form of magic that blends astrology with precise geometry.
The Iron-Born Dwarves: Having abandoned the surface during the ancient cataclysm, these dwarves have traded traditional mysticism for advanced mechanical engineering. They use Aetherite-powered exosuits to mine the dangerous depths of Xylos and view craftsmanship not just as a profession, but as a literal form of worship.
The Rift-Touched Humans: Humanity in Valsharein is remarkably adaptable but bears the literal scars of the world's magical history. Many humans born near the Aether-Wastes possess minor magical mutations—such as heterochromia that glows in the dark or skin with faint, metallic patterns—and they often display a natural resilience to magical curses.
The Umbral Syndicate: Operating in the shadows of every major surface city, this multi-racial faction is composed of outcasts, tieflings, and rogue mages. They control the black-market trade of raw Aetherite and ancient artifacts, serving as the hidden hand that balances the power between the Elven magocracy and the Human republics.
Magic and Technology: The Aether-Flux
Magic in Valsharein is not an infinite, invisible pool; it is a tangible, fluid atmosphere called the Aether-Flux. The Flux flows through the world like ocean currents, rising and falling with the phases of Valsharein's two moons, Solis and Lunae.
[ The Aether-Flux Cycle ]
High Moon (Solis) ----> Flux Rises ----> Magic is volatile, powerful, and hard to control.
Low Moon (Lunae) ----> Flux Falls ----> Magic is stable, weaker, and requires focus.
To cast a spell, a mage must actively draw the Flux into their body and shape it. Doing so without proper training or focus can result in Flux-Burn, a debilitating condition that crystallizes the caster's internal organs into useless glass.
This danger led to the invention of Aether-Tech. By storing the Flux inside refined Aetherite crystals, engineers can power mechanical constructs, light city streets, and fire arcane artillery without putting human lives at risk. This fusion of magic and industry has sparked an industrial revolution in the heart of Xylos, creating a tense cold war between the traditional, spell-weaving Elves of Eldoria and the tech-reliant Dwarves of Krag-Deep.
History and Cosmic Conflict
The history of Valsharein is split into two distinct eras: Before the Fracture and The Age of the Rebirth.
Ten thousand years ago, Valsharein was ruled by a pantheon of immortal titans who waged a catastrophic war against one another. The final battle, known as the Fracture, shattered the single mega-continent into the three current landmasses and tore holes in the sky, creating the Aether-Wastes. The titans destroyed themselves, but their lingering essence still bleeds into the world.
In the current era, a new threat is emerging from the deep trenches of the Sunken Reach. Known as The Void-Eaten, these are creatures and people corrupted by the remnant malice of the fallen titans. They seek to collapse the World-Gates, isolate the continents, and plunge Valsharein back into the chaotic darkness of the Fracture.
As the Aether-Flux begins to grow erratic and the black glass sands of Xylos expand, the nations of Valsharein are realizing that their survival depends on a fragile alliance. They must bridge the gap between ancient magic and new technology before the world they fought so hard to rebuild falls apart once more.
